Snæfellsnes – from above and beyond
Two day tour – with Vatnshellir cave
Practical tour information
The Snæfellsnes peninsula and the west coast of Iceland offers diverse landscapes with sparkling fjords, sheer sea cliffs, a glacier, sweeping beaches and beautiful mountain scenery. On the way to Snæfellsnes we stop by Deildartunguhver hot spring area and the two beautiful waterfalls Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. We stop for lunch at Húsafell and drive to Ytri-Tunga where we try to say hello to some curious seals on the beach. After a good day of sightseeing we check in to our hotel in the Stykkishólmur where it is an option to take a stroll in the beautiful village or a swim in the local swimming pool and have dinner either at your hotel or one of the restaurants in town. In the evening you will have an option to hunt for the northern lights either on site, if weather conditions are in our favour, or on a guided tour away from the light pollution of the village.
After breakfast on Thursday we head on to the picturesque Kirkjufell mountain. The name Kirkjufell means Church mountain and it derives its name from the unusual shape. From Kirkjufell we head onwards along the north coast of Snæfellsnes. We stop in the fishing village Hellisandur for lunch and thereafter we drive through the Snæfellsnes national park, with good views of Snæfellsnes glacier, to a cave called Vatnshellir. There we go beyond on a 90 minutes cave tour with cave experts. The cave reaches 35 meters below the surface and there you will see some unique colorful lava formations. After we surface again we stop in a very small village Hellnar that used to be the largest fishing village in the area but now you will just find the remaining’s of the glory days, a beautiful old church and a charming little coffee house in perfect settings on the beach. In good weather it is an option to hike a path (30 minutes) along the beach to Arnarstapi village where our next stop is. At Arnarstapi we stop by the huge statue of Bárður Snæfellsás, the half human and half troll that is according to the myths, the protector of this area. From Arnarstapi we head on towards Reykjavík with a brief stop in Borgarnes and drop you off by your hotel around 19:00.
